Robert Mapplethrope
Robert Mapplethorpe is widely recognized as a giant of late 20th century photograph and is best known for his large-scale, highly stylized black and white portraits of flowers and nude men. His depiction of frank, homosexual eroticism continues to incite controversy and has raised questions of censorship in art at various points. He died of AIDS-related complications in 1989.
